Urquhart Castle: worth it, and when to go

A genuinely good ruin let down by midday crowds. How to time it, and whether the visitor centre earns its fee.

By Al Coppin · Inverness

Urquhart Castle is the ruin everyone photographs from a Loch Ness cruise, and up close it earns the fuss — a proper medieval fortress on a promontory with the loch stretching away behind it. The problem isn't the castle. It's that at midday in summer you'll share it with every coach on the A82.

When to go

Time it and it's a different place. Book the first slot of the day or the last couple of hours and you get it closer to how it should feel — quiet, windswept, yours for a bit. Last entry shifts with the season [CHECK: Apr–Aug last entry 7.15pm, Sept 5pm, Oct 4pm, Nov–Mar 3.30pm, historicenvironment.scot].

Do you need to book?

Yes — you now need to book in advance with a timed entry slot (and a parking bay if you're driving), so don't just turn up in July expecting to walk in [CHECK: advance booking required, historicenvironment.scot]. Historic Environment Scotland members get in free, which pays for itself quickly if you're doing a few Highland castles.

Is it worth it?

For most people, yes. Reckon on somewhere around £14 a head booked online, a little more if you walk up — exact fares are in the panel below. The visitor-centre film and the trebuchet are better than they need to be, and the walk down to the ruin is short. But if you're short on time and only want the classic postcard view, you can get most of that free from the lay-bys above the castle — my free viewpoints guide covers where to stand.
