The Mustard Seed: Dinner in an Old Kirk

Book here through the wrong site and you might end up half an hour into someone else's dinner reservation — it's happened to more people than you'd think, thanks to an OpenTable mix-up that, for a while, pointed bookings at an entirely different Mustard Seed. Staff told us it wasn't just us. We laughed about it, got seated anyway since there was room, and had one of the better meals we've had in Inverness.

None of that's really the point, though. The real draw is the building: a converted 19th-century church on the banks of the River Ness, with a double-height ceiling, an open fire, and a mezzanine that looks straight out over the water.

From kirk to kitchen

The church conversion is what sells the place before the food even arrives — original features kept where they could be, mixed in with modern finishes, and a top-floor terrace that opens up for alfresco dining in the warmer months. It's the kind of room that makes an ordinary Tuesday dinner feel like an occasion.

What's actually good

The menu leans modern European with a proper Highland backbone — think 28-day aged Highland rump steak and a seafood risotto that regulars keep coming back for. The two-course menu, often under £20, is genuinely good value for the setting, and the espresso martinis get mentioned in reviews often enough that they're clearly not just a novelty.

Before you go

Book ahead, especially for weekend evenings — it fills up fast, and the mezzanine can get lively when it does. Open seven days: lunch 12–3, early evening 5–6.30, dinner through to 10. It's a flat, easy walk from the city centre, ten to twenty minutes depending on where you're starting from.

Ask for a seat by the window if you can — the light off the river in the evening does something to that room that a converted church has no right to look this good doing. Just double-check your booking went to the right Mustard Seed first.
